In Jubs first stage, it was the turn of Feevale’s individual athletes to compete for medals in two categories: swimming and track and field. Lucas Ferraz led Feevale to its first gold medal in the competition when he reached the mark of 3.30m in the pole vault. Ferraz also won a bronze medal in decathlon, with a mark of 6598 points. With a gold medal in JUBs, the athlete is now to represent Brazil in the South American University Games that will take place in Argentina in 2016.

Feevale’s third medal was won by Sandra Leonhardt. She reached 46,50 meters in hammer throw. Sandra also had the fourth best performance in discus throw, with 33,60m. In shot put, the athlete reached 9,47m in the qualifiers, mark that put her in ninth and prevented her from going to the finals.

Feevale also got good results in track and field with Guilherme Scolari, who was the fourth in long jump, with 6,55m, and the eighth 110 meters hurdles in 16.25. Maria Reginaldo was the fifth fastest in Brazil 400 meters hurdles in 1:09.

Team Sports

Team sports began in the second stage of JUBs. Differently from individual categories, the teams are qualified in three divisions. Feevale’s men’s futsal team was the only gaúcho team to be in the first division in 2015, while the other teams competed in the second division. Runner up in 2014, the team has already got a place for the first division for 2016, after thrashing Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI) 8-3 in the decisive game and finishing as the fifth best team in Brazil.

The gaúcho gold in team sports was won by Feevale’s women’s volleyball. In an excellent campaign, being beaten just one set during the whole competition, the team played for the champion title with Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. It was a tight game, but Feevale showed why it was the favorite candidate to the title and won 3-0. With the second division champion title, Feevale took Rio Grande do Sul back to the top flight in JUBs.

Women’s futsal team won Feevale’s fifth medal. After losing the semifinal for Faculdade Araguaia, from Goiás, the athletes played the third-place playoff match with Upis, from Distrito Federal, team already played against in the group stage. The third-place playoff match was won by the gaúcho team 4 to 3.

Women’s handball was close to the bronze medal, but it was beaten for 3 goals difference by Centro Universitário João Pessoa. After a positive campaign in the groups’ stage, in which Feevale’s team won all the three games of that phase, the athletes were out of the final when they were beaten by Universidade de Brasília 25-21. For the third place, Feevale was beaten by the team from Paraiba 25-22. With this result, Feevale’s team ended JUBs as the fourth best team.

Men’s volleyball team did not take the podium either, but could keep its place in the second division after beating Faculdade Evolução Alto Oeste Potiguar, from Rio Grande do Norte, 3 sets 2.

“This competition was a huge overcoming, with many strong athletes and very hot weather, which turned the competition into a great feeling of accomplishment. I was very satisfied with my performance. I think I represented well my university. I am extremely happy I was qualified to the University’s South American Games and I hope to represent Brazil very well. This was the fifth time I participated in the JUBs, winning five medals. All of them are a result of much dedication, preparation and intensive training throughout the year, always trying to improve and reach perfection”.
Lucas Ferraz, athlete

“I become very happy when I am able to come back from a competition like JUBs with a medal. It is an honor to take the name of my university to the podium. This year I have had many difficulties to train and during the competition I suffered with the heat, but even so, I did a great competition and came back very happy with the result. I believe this medal will bring motivation to keep training and also will help me to maintain the scholarship”.
Sandra Leonhardt, athlete

“The first place in JUBs distinguishes the whole work developed with the team during the year. It is great to represent so well our state, Rio Grande do Sul, and our university. It is rewarding and moving. This title came to celebrate all we have done since the beginning of the year. The basis of our team will be the same for 2016, but we will have changes, since many girls are graduating which is natural in teams inside universities. Our goal will be to create a good team, because we know the first division is stronger and harder”.
Leandro Bitello, coach of the volleyball teams

“We went with the intention of staying in the second division and we finished in third place, so, to us, it looks like a great title. We overcame our expectation, because our campaign was very positive and in an upward direction, with the girls improving their performance in each game. We know that the level in Brazilian female futsal is high, that there are eight or ten teams that are always in the elite, so, to next year, we will work to improve more”.
Vilson Agostini, coach of women’s futsal
