The health of the animal, named Saci, has been restored
The health of Saci, a colt treated at Feevale Veterinary Hospital (Hovet), has been fully restored. In November 2022, veterinarian Mosael Taschetto, from the Campo Bom City Hall, contacted Hovet after finding the animal abandoned in the city. Now approximately two years and six months old, Saci arrived at the hospital with a deep wound on his hind limb, generalized infections, altered bloodwork, and malnutrition. At the time, he weighed 118 kg, but today, he weighs 300 kg.
According to Gabriel Pereira, a professor of Veterinary Medicine at Feevale University, the animal was immediately treated upon arrival at Hovet, and urgent wound care was performed to restore his clinical condition. “We carried out treatments to restore the colt's condition and improve the wound. Saci arrived with no hoof on his right hind limb, and the hospital welcomed him to ensure significant recovery and a favorable prognosis,” Pereira explains.
After initial improvements during the first weeks of care at Hovet, the animal underwent surgery to amputate part of the injured hind limb. The procedure was performed in the large animal surgical center at Feevale Veterinary Hospital. “In collaboration with veterinarian Mosael and colleague Henrique Mondardo Cardoso, a veterinarian from Canoas City Hall, we decided to amputate the metatarsal region of the hind limb due to healing problems and frequent bleeding. The colt was unable to put weight on the limb. With the amputation, the animal could use prosthetics, avoiding future infections and ensuring a favorable life prognosis,” states the professor.
The colt remains at Hovet, with the involvement and support of Feevale’s Veterinary Medicine students and staff, including technician José Luiz Ávila Terra and large animal monitors at the hospital. Saci is up to date with vaccines and dental treatments and will soon receive his permanent prosthetic. He is available for adoption upon evaluation.
