LAD Awards had more than 1500 projects registered and took place in Ceará
Augusto Luís dos Santos, an academic from the Design course at Feevale, won the Poster and Self-Promotion sub-categories of the student category of the LAD Awards, an award that recognizes the work of designers from Latin America or Latin designers who live in other regions. In its eighth edition, this is the first time that the event has been held in Brazil, having taken place in Fortaleza (CE). The LAD Awards had more than 1500 projects entered in this edition, with around 400 in the final phase.
Luís dos Santos was awarded for “Homônimos Visuais” project, developed in the Surface Design discipline, in 2022, taught by professor Ana Paula Steigleder. The work proposed that students create a local print, using techniques learned in class or any others preferred by the students.
"The project proposes a fusion between manual objects and technical texts found in leaflets and product manuals. In a play on words, I sought to challenge the perception of what is considered manual, combining analogue and digital techniques to create a series of posters. The process included the scanning and manipulation of everyday objects, such as scissors and hammers, followed by printing and painting over the resulting images,” she explains.
The student points out that the work highlights the importance of experimentation in design, showing how exploration outside the screen can lead to unique insights and results, not exclusively achievable digitally.
With this project, and the many others we have, I always try to do as close to a real delivery to a client. I believe that at the university, we often have an opportunity to create things that can also position us in the market, hence the importance of total immersion in what is being done”, says Luís dos Santos, who already won the Salão Creative, in the Editorial Design category, and in 2022, Silver in the Bornancini Award, in the Promotional/Student category.
The professor of Design, Graphic Design, Fashion and Advertising courses, Ana Paula Steigleder, points out that the student is introduced to the Surface Design discipline through a theoretical-practical approach, with experimental workshops, in which various techniques are explored.
“This process expands your creative repertoire and allows your projects to stand out in the market in an authorial way. Design awards play a fundamental role in valuing, recognizing and developing students, increasing professional visibility and highlighting talents. Furthermore, they boost students’ careers, facilitating their insertion into the job market and opening doors to new opportunities”, he highlights.
Agency projects also provide awards
A graduate student of the Design course was also awarded at the LAD Awards, but it was based on work carried out in the job market. Nicolas Odorizi shared the award in the Illustration category with the team from the Studiobah agency, in Porto Alegre. The recognition was granted to the Roister Limited Edition project, a series of illustrations for the packaging of the new line of beers at Roister, a restaurant in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul whose central concept is Food and Beer Culture.
